September is the first month of the fall season. When thinking of this month, most of us fondly reminisce on fall colors, warm pumpkin-flavored drinks, and finally getting to break out our fall wardrobes.
However, September is also a month that can wreak havoc on your sinuses due to allergies, sicknesses, and other factors. Commonly, people do not know how to distinguish what type of breathing or sleep problems they may have. Are your symptoms from allergies, COVID-19, sleep apnea, or something else?
Fortunately, two organizations, The American Academy of Otolaryngology–Head and Neck Surgery (AAO-HNS) and the American Sleep Apnea Association, have decided to raise awareness with campaigns in which partnering doctors provide easily accessible information for the public to better understand sleep and breathing ailments.
At Silenso Clinic, we believe it’s essential for our community to comprehend how sinus, breathing, and sleep conditions can negatively affect our daily lives. For this reason, we’ve decided to participate in World Sinus Health Awareness Day and Sleeptember.
World Sinus Health Awareness Day
The American Academy of Otolaryngology–Head and Neck Surgery (AAO-HNS) decided to sponsor the very first “World Sinus Health Awareness Day” to help patients better prepare themselves for sinus conditions.
Recognized on September 29th, World Health Awareness Day will have participating doctors, such as Silenso’s sleep and breathing specialist Dr. Paul Schalch Lepe, provide useful information regarding the causes of their nasal and sinus symptoms as well as how they can improve these and when they should seek additional specialized care.
Common sinus conditions include:
- Chronis sinusitis
- Deviated septum
- Nasal obstruction
- Chronic rhinitis
- Obstructive sleep apnea
- Snoring
- Chronic tonsilitis
In wake of the COVID 19 pandemic, many patients are not able to delineate other ailments from COVID-19- related symptoms. The information in the links above can be very beneficial in helping patients understand what their treatment options are, who they should seek out for help, and what reasonable expectations are for finding relief of their symptoms. Patients are encouraged to contact Dr. Schalch Lepe for guidance if they do struggle with breathing or sinus issues.
Sleeptember
Sleep is one of the foundations of a healthy life. However, a startling number of people have not sought out treatments for conditions (such as OSA and snoring) that can significantly hinder sleep and diminish quality of life.
Some eye-opening statistics on sleep:
- 70 million Americans suffer from sleep and wakefulness disorders, hindering daily functioning, adversely affecting health and longevity.
- 80% of moderate and severe obstructive sleep apnea cases are undiagnosed.
- Women are 8x less likely to have OSA.
- Women are 8 times less likely to be diagnosed with OSA.
- Up to 4% of all children suffer from sleep apnea, commonly misdiagnosed as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.
In light of these stats, the American Sleep Apnea Association started its Sleeptember campaign to show the connections between OSA and other health conditions, boost awareness of the public health impact of sleep disorders, and highlight the necessity of patient-designed research.
Silenso Clinic’s website is a trusted source of sleep health information, providing useful direction on what sleep apnea and snoring are, how they affect your life if left untreated, and also how to go about choosing the best treatments to alleviate your condition.
